What is the treatment for gouty arthritis?

My mother has been suffering from really bad joint pain, especially in her big toe, and the doctor said it might be gouty arthritis. We're looking into treatment options. What usually works for this condition?

Gout treatment is mostly about lowering uric acid levels. Along with the medications your doctor gives, staying well-hydrated, avoiding high-purine foods like red meat, and regular light exercise help tremendously in keeping flares away.

I was just told that my high uric acid is causing joint pain. My doctor mentioned some medications to reduce the swelling. Does anyone know if we have to take these uric acid medicines lifelong?

During an acute attack, doctors usually prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs or specific gout medicines to reduce pain. For the long term, they will put you on uric-acid-lowering pills. Please get your uric acid levels tested and consult a GP.

I totally get it, that sudden, sharp pain in the big toe is absolutely unbearable. Doctors usually give quick pain relief meds for the flare-up and then long-term pills to manage uric acid. Please rest the joint and apply ice for some relief.

I just recovered from a severe gout flare-up. My doctor prescribed a short course of anti-inflammatory pills which brought the swelling down in two days, and now I am on a daily tablet to keep my uric acid in check. Cutting down on spinach and alcohol also helped.

I had high uric acid last year and my toe swelled up like crazy. The doctor gave me some tablets to clear the pain and told me to drink 3-4 liters of water daily to flush out the acid. It worked perfectly, no flares since then.

Honestly, gout pain woke me up at 3 AM and kept me awake all night. The only thing that saved me was the medication my doctor prescribed, combined with drinking gallons of water. Don't suffer silently, just get the pills from a doc.
