What is sciatica pain in pregnancy?

My neighbor, who is pregnant, has been suffering from a lot of leg and back pain. She mentioned her doctor called it 'sciatica pain in pregnancy'. What does this mean and why does it happen during pregnancy?

Oh sweetheart, don't stress too much about this. Sciatica is just that annoying shooting pain in your lower back and legs when the baby shifts and presses on a nerve. Try using a hot water bag and resting on your side, it really helps!

According to the tracking apps, sciatica during pregnancy usually flares up in the second or third trimester as your weight distribution changes. I highly recommend using a pregnancy pillow to keep your spine aligned at night and logging your daily steps to keep blood circulation active.

Sciatica in pregnancy is caused by the hormone relaxin loosening pelvic ligaments combined with the baby's pressure on the nerve. While safe stretching can offer relief, consulting your doctor is best to ensure there are no underlying spinal issues before starting any physical therapy.

I'm just in my first trimester and starting to learn about this. Does this pain happen to everyone, or is there a way we can prevent it early on through light walks? I am a bit scared of getting severe back pain later.

Please do not try random pelvic stretches or herbal pain balms you see on social media for pregnancy sciatica. Every pregnancy has different risk factors, and incorrect movements can strain your ligaments. Have your obstetrician verify any therapy before you start.

It's basically your future baby practicing their karate kicks directly on your main leg nerve! It is super common and thankfully temporary. Just treat yourself to a nice, gentle back rub and some quality couch time.

I had terrible sciatica during my eighth month and could barely walk some days. My doctor suggested wearing a supportive maternity belt to lift the belly weight off my pelvis, which was a total lifesaver. Avoid standing on hard surfaces for too long.

It is just nerve pain from the baby's weight. Rest well and keep a pillow between your knees.
