What is dilation in pregnancy?

I'm pregnant with my first child and during a recent check-up, the doctor mentioned 'dilation'. I know it's related to labour, but can someone explain in simple terms what dilation in pregnancy actually is and how it progresses?

Hey, don't stress too much about big words! Dilation in pregnancy just means your cervix (the opening to your uterus) is starting to open up to prepare for birth. They measure it in centimeters during your checkups. It's a normal part of labor, you'll be fine!

Oh, I've read about this! It's when the cervix, which is the lower part of the uterus, starts to open up during labor. They measure how many centimeters it has opened, and 10 cm is considered full dilation for delivery. It's a crucial step in childbirth.

It can be a very anxious time, waiting for that dilation number to go up. For me, it felt like forever. It's when your cervix widens to allow the baby to pass. Don't feel bad if it takes time; every body is different. Just focus on your breathing and staying calm as much as possible.

Oh, dilation! Yeah, that's when your cervix opens up for the baby to come out. My elder sister just had a baby and she was talking about it, how they measure it in cm. It's a sign that labor is progressing, pretty cool how the body does that.

My wife experienced this with both our children. Dilation is when the cervix opens up. The doctors will check for it during active labor to see the progress. It's a natural process, but sometimes it takes longer. Make sure to support her, keep her comfortable, and follow all doctor's instructions.

I went through this twice. Dilation is basically your cervix opening up. They'll check it internally during labor to see how far along you are. Walking and certain positions can help with dilation. Just listen to your doctor and nurses; they'll guide you through it. It's tough but manageable.
