What is a cervical check pregnancy?

I'm in my last trimester and my doctor said she might need to do a 'cervical check'. I'm a bit nervous, what does that involve during pregnancy?

Hey! A cervical check is just when the doctor manually checks your cervix in the later weeks of pregnancy to see if it has started dilating or softening. It can feel a bit uncomfortable or like a pinch, but it is over very quickly. Just try to breathe through it and relax your muscles as much as possible.

In our days, the midwives and doctors always did these checks in the ninth month to see how close the baby was. It is a very normal part of pregnancy to check if the cervix is thinning out. Trust your doctor, keep your mind calm, and focus on the beautiful arrival of your little one.

Oh god, I was so anxious before my first cervical check because I read so many scary stories online! It is basically the doctor checking if your cervix is opening up for delivery. Honestly, it was uncomfortable but definitely not as painful as I had built it up in my head. You can do this, just don't stress!

My wife had these checks during her final weeks to monitor progress before delivery. Along with these check-ups, she kept up with light walking and pelvic floor exercises, which our doctor said really helped her stay flexible and prepared. It is just a routine physical assessment of the cervix.

I completely understand if you are feeling nervous or scared about this check, as vaginal exams can feel very invasive and anxiety-inducing. It is just a quick physical exam by your doctor to check cervix dilation and effacement. Please let your doctor know if you are feeling anxious so they can go slowly and keep you comfortable.

During my 37th week, my doctor did a cervical check to see if my body was getting ready for labor. For me, it felt like a quick, slightly intense cramp, and I had some light spotting afterward, which the doctor said was totally normal. I am not an expert, but that was just my personal experience with it.

Cervical checks are done to check dilation, but please make sure it is done by your trusted OB-GYN under sterile conditions. In my case, I had an incompetent cervix which required a cerclage, so these checks were crucial. If you feel any severe pain or experience heavy bleeding after a check, contact your hospital immediately.
