What happens if you take metformin and you're not diabetic?

My neighbour was mistakenly given metformin instead of her usual medicine at the pharmacy. She's not diabetic. What happens if someone takes metformin and they're not diabetic?

Haan, actually metformin sirf diabetes ke liye nahi hoti, log isse weight loss aur PCOS ke liye bhi lete hain. Kuch zyada nahi hoga agar galti se ek baar kha li, bas thoda stomach upset ya loose motions ho sakte hain, tension mat lo na.

I am not diabetic but my doctor prescribed me metformin for my PCOS and insulin resistance. It helped regulate my periods but it gave me bad nausea and stomach cramps initially. Please don't take it without a prescription, as everyone's body reacts differently.

I completely understand why you are feeling anxious about taking a wrong pill, health scares are the worst. If it was just one tablet of metformin, you will likely be absolutely fine. Just eat a normal meal and monitor how your stomach feels.

Don't worry too much! Metformin doesn't usually cause a major sugar crash like insulin does. You might just feel a bit nauseous or have a funny metallic taste in your mouth today. Drink lots of water!

Metformin can sometimes cause lactic acidosis, a rare but serious condition, especially if you have underlying kidney issues. If you took it by mistake and feel weak, nauseous, or have rapid breathing, please visit a doctor for safety.
