What happens if you go to sleep with a concussion?

My younger brother fell down while playing cricket yesterday and hit his head. Someone told my mom not to let him sleep if he has a concussion. Is that true, or can he sleep to recover?

If there is any chance of a concussion, please do not go to sleep before getting a medical evaluation. You need a proper scan to rule out any internal head injury or brain bleeding.

The old belief that you should never let someone sleep after a concussion is slightly outdated, but it is still critical to get a doctor's clearance first. The main danger is sleeping through worsening symptoms like bleeding in the brain, so professional evaluation is always recommended.

I always try to be very careful with head injuries. It is much safer to stay awake for a few hours and get evaluated by a medical professional to ensure everything is okay before you rest.

I totally get it, you probably feel extremely tired and just want to shut your eyes after a head bump. But please have someone monitor you or visit a clinic first to be completely sure you are safe.

Going to sleep with an unchecked concussion can be dangerous if there is internal bleeding. Please see a doctor immediately.

I had a bad crash on my bike last year and felt super dizzy. My friends didn't let me sleep and took me straight to the casualty ward, which was good because the doctor told me sleeping right after a head injury can mask serious brain symptoms.

Bro, don't sleep off a head injury! If you are feeling nauseous, dizzy, or have a bad headache, you need to get checked at the emergency room right now.
