What happens if you are denied a liver transplant?

A close relative of mine is in urgent need of a liver transplant, but there have been some complications. If a patient is denied a liver transplant after all the preparations, what happens to them then? Is there any other option for survival?

This sounds so scary and stressful, my uncle is going through liver issues and we are also worried about this. Have other families here faced a rejection from a hospital? What are the other options or second opinions we can look into in such a situation?

When a liver transplant is not an option immediately, the main focus has to be on managing the symptoms and protecting the remaining liver function. Watch the diet very closely, especially if the patient also has diabetes, to keep blood sugars and toxins under control. Keep in constant touch with a good hepatologist.

Beta, in such difficult times, we must keep our minds strong and peaceful. While you are seeking other medical opinions, make sure the patient gets very light, salt-free, home-cooked meals to reduce the load on the liver. Do not try any strong ayurvedic herbs without consulting the main doctor, as it can harm the liver further.

Don't lose hope just yet! It is not the final whistle of the match. Doctors sometimes deny it temporarily if there is a minor issue that can be fixed first, like an active infection. Get a clear checklist from them on why they said no, and then work on solving those points.

If a transplant is denied, first find out the exact reason from the transplant coordinator—is it medical, financial, or donor-related? Once you know the reason, you can either appeal the decision, look for a different donor, or approach a government-aided hospital that might have different rules.

My father always says that when one door closes, we must stay calm and look for another way. If one hospital denies it, please take all your medical records and consult another major transplant center for a second opinion. Sometimes different doctors have different criteria for evaluation.
