What happens during an asthma attack?

My younger brother has asthma, and sometimes he gets these sudden attacks. It's really scary to watch him struggle for breath. What exactly happens during an asthma attack inside the body?

Honestly, it feels like you are trying to breathe through a very thin straw and your chest gets super tight. I start panicking and that actually makes it so much worse. Does anyone else get that sudden coughing fit that just won't stop?

Just went through this last week during the dust storm. Your airways swell up and there is a lot of wheezing, plus you feel like you can't get enough air into your lungs. My doctor adjusted my inhaler dose and that finally brought things under control.

Please don't try any ghar ke nuskhe or random breathing tricks you read online during an attack. It is a serious medical emergency where your lungs are struggling. Get to a doctor or emergency room immediately to get it checked properly.

Beta, during an attack the muscles around your airways tighten up, making it very hard to breathe. It can be quite scary, but try to sit upright and use your prescribed inhaler. If the breathlessness doesn't improve in a few minutes, please see a doctor right away.

It is basically severe inflammation where your airways constrict and produce extra mucus. You will hear a distinct wheezing sound and struggle to catch your breath. Always keep your rescue inhaler handy because you can't take chances with this.
