What happens during a migraine?

I've been suffering from migraines for a few years now, and they can be debilitating. I want to understand what's actually happening in my brain or body during a migraine attack. What goes on inside?

I was reading about this because my roommate gets them. Apparently, there is a throbbing pain mostly on one side of the head, and even normal light or sound becomes completely unbearable. It sounds so painful that people have to lie down in a dark room for hours.

During a migraine, my stomach also goes for a toss along with my head, and I feel super nauseous. Some people say certain foods like aged cheese or chocolates trigger it, which is so sad for food lovers like me. Honestly, I just crave simple warm ginger tea and a quiet corner when it strikes.

I have dealt with these painful headaches for over thirty years. During an attack, you feel a pulsing sensation in your head and might see flashing lights. But don't lose heart, with age and proper lifestyle changes, the frequency of these attacks definitely goes down.

Completely agree, the sensitivity to smell is also very high during a migraine. Placing a cold compress on your forehead can provide some immediate relief.

During the actual attack, any physical exertion like lifting weights or running can make the throbbing pain much worse. However, doing regular light yoga and gentle walking on non-migraine days can actually help reduce the frequency of these attacks. Just don't push yourself when the pain is active.

I have recently started getting very sharp headaches on one side of my head, especially when I go out in the sun. Is it possible that this is a migraine, or is it just a normal tension headache? How do we find out the difference without getting scared?

A migraine attack can completely derail your workday. You experience a severe pounding headache, blurred vision, and inability to focus on screens. The most practical thing is to take your doctor-prescribed medicine immediately at the first sign, instead of waiting for the pain to get worse.

During a migraine, blood vessels in the brain expand and contract, releasing chemicals that cause intense throbbing pain. Along with the headache, many people get vomiting and extreme fatigue. Keeping a pain diary to identify your triggers is a very practical way to manage it over time.

Oh, I totally feel your pain, migraines are the absolute worst! For me, it starts with a blind spot in my eyes and then turns into a blinding headache. I find that sleeping in a completely dark room with an ice pack wrapped around my neck helps me recover the fastest.

My teenage daughter gets severe migraine attacks before her exams. She feels a terrible throbbing pain on one side of her face and cannot look at her books or phone. I make sure she rests in a dark, quiet room with a cool cloth on her head until the pain subsides.
