What foods to eat to avoid kidney stones?

My brother just passed a kidney stone, and it was very painful. He wants to adjust his diet so it doesn't happen again. What foods should he eat regularly to prevent kidney stones?

Drinking lots of water and cutting down on excess salt is the best way to prevent them.

Does anyone else get scared of eating spinach or tomatoes because of kidney stone risk? I read somewhere they have oxalates, but I'm too anxious about what is actually safe to eat daily now.

Honestly, keeping up with my water intake is harder than my actual job. I just keep a giant bottle next to my bed and squeeze some lemon in it so it doesn't taste boring. Avoid too much soda and salty late-night chips if you value your peace.

Please be very careful with self-treating. I ignored my diet and ended up needing surgery for a blocked ureter. Go get an ultrasound and ask your doctor what type of stone you have, as diet changes depend on whether it is calcium oxalate or uric acid.

Simple rule: drink 3 to 4 liters of water daily, eat home-cooked food with low salt, and include citrus fruits like oranges and lemons in your diet. Don't overcomplicate it with fancy detox drinks.
