What does progesterone do during pregnancy?

I'm newly pregnant and my doctor said they'll be monitoring my progesterone levels. I know it's important, but I'm not exactly sure why. What does progesterone do during pregnancy, and why is it so crucial?

Progesterone is just the main hormone that helps keep the baby safe in the womb. It supports your pregnancy and makes sure everything goes smoothly. Don't worry, your body knows what to do.

Think of progesterone as the hormone that prepares and relaxes your uterus so the pregnancy can grow safely. It also prevents early contractions. It does cause some side effects like bloating and fatigue, but that just means it is working.

There is a lot of half-baked information about hormones online. Progesterone is crucial for maintaining the pregnancy, but if you are taking external supplements, only follow what your gynecologist prescribed. Don't go by what people recommend on forums.

It basically thickens the uterine lining so the embryo can implant and grow properly. It also relaxes smooth muscles, which is why your digestion slows down and you might feel super bloated. Tracking your symptoms on an app can help you see the patterns.

My doctor explained that progesterone is the 'pregnancy hormone' because it prevents the uterus from contracting and rejecting the fetus. It also helps build the placenta and stimulates breast tissue growth. It is absolutely essential for keeping the pregnancy stable.

I had low progesterone levels in my first trimester and faced some bleeding, so my doctor had to put me on daily progesterone injections. If you are experiencing any pain or spotting, please get your levels checked by your doctor immediately.

Our elders always say to rest well in the early months because the body is working hard. Progesterone is the natural hormone that holds the pregnancy strong. Trust your doctor's prescriptions if they have given you extra support tablets.
