What causes sleeplessness in pregnancy?

I'm in my second trimester, and for the past few weeks, I've been struggling to sleep properly. I feel restless and can't get comfortable, no matter what I try. Is it common to have trouble sleeping during pregnancy, and why does it happen?

Sleeplessness during pregnancy is very common and usually caused by hormonal surges, frequent washroom trips, and finding it hard to get comfortable with the growing belly. Try using a pregnancy pillow to support your back and hips, it works wonders.

I am looking into this as we are planning a family soon. Is sleeplessness more common in the first trimester due to hormones, or does it get worse in the third trimester because of physical discomfort?

I had terrible insomnia during my third trimester because of back pain and constant baby kicks. My doctor suggested sleeping on my left side with bent knees and keeping dinner very light to avoid acidity. Doing this made my nights much more bearable.

Drinking warm milk with cardamom before bed and doing light stretches can help relax your body. However, if your sleeplessness is due to severe itching, extreme anxiety, or intense pain, please consult your gynaecologist immediately.

I totally get it, trying to sleep when you can't find a comfortable position and have to pee every hour is so exhausting. It is completely normal due to the physical and hormonal changes. Just take short naps during the day whenever you get a chance.

I was researching this for my sister and found that progesterone fluctuations can heavily disrupt the sleep cycle. Plus, physical things like heartburn and leg cramps are also major causes of waking up constantly.
