What causes pregnancy brain?

Ever since I became pregnant, I feel like my brain is just not working the same way. I forget things easily and feel a bit foggy. My friends call it 'pregnancy brain'. Is this real, and if so, what causes pregnancy brain?

My mother used to say forgetting things is because of the body's energy shifting to the baby, but my gynecologist explained it is due to huge surges of progesterone and estrogen. Hormones physically affect your brain's spatial memory. It is a very natural phase, so don't worry too much.

This forgetfulness is so real, haan na. You keep your keys in the fridge and look for them everywhere. It is just hormonal changes and lack of proper sleep making us super foggy, so it is totally fine.

I logged my sleep and daily brain fog episodes on my pregnancy app, and the correlation was clear. Massive spikes in progesterone combined with poor REM sleep scores on my smartwatch directly caused that spaced-out feeling. Using digital checklists really saved my life back then.

The mind gets scattered because of the massive hormonal transition and lack of deep rest. Practicing gentle pranayama and basic mindfulness can help ground your nervous system and bring back mental clarity. Be gentle with your body during this beautiful phase.

Beta, when you are carrying a life, your body is working double shift and it is natural to forget small things. Eat a few soaked almonds every morning and take proper rest. Don't stress your mind with too much thinking, everything will settle after delivery.

Pregnancy brain, or cognitive fog, is a well-documented phenomenon caused by hormonal fluctuations, sleep deprivation, and the psychological stress of preparing for a baby. While it is harmless and temporary, consult your doctor if you experience extreme anxiety or mood swings.

My sister is pregnant and she literally forgot where she parked her scooter yesterday. It's crazy but apparently, hormones and sleep deprivation just scramble the brain's RAM temporarily.

Don't panic about the forgetfulness, we see this in the ward all the time. Your body is directing its blood flow and hormonal energy to support the fetus, plus sleep quality drops in the later trimesters. Just keep a small notepad handy for your daily tasks.

I was researching this because my cousin has been super forgetful lately. Studies actually show that a pregnant woman's brain undergoes structural changes to prepare her for maternal bonding, which temporarily affects short-term memory. It's fascinating how the body adapts!
