What causes pain behind knee after total knee replacement?

My father had a total knee replacement surgery about six months ago. Now he's complaining of pain right behind the operated knee. Is this normal after such a surgery, or should we be worried?

Hey! Pain behind the knee after surgery is often due to tight calf muscles or swelling stretching the joint. Keep doing your daily physio exercises and you will see gradual improvement soon! 👍

My doctor warned me that diabetic patients can have slower healing and more nerve sensitivity behind the knee after joint replacement. Please keep your blood sugar levels tightly controlled and discuss this specific pain with your surgeon.

Ji, after such a big operation, the veins and muscles behind the knee take a lot of time to adjust and stretch. Please don't worry too much, just talk to your doctor and do your knee exercises very gently every day.

Yes, stretching of the back joint capsule is very common post-surgery. Checking for any deep vein swelling with your surgeon is always the safest step.

I completely understand how alarming it feels to have new pain behind the knee after going through a major surgery. It is very common as your ligaments heal, but please mention it to your physical therapist to put your mind at peace.
