What causes pain and swelling in the knee?

My knee has been hurting and looks a bit swollen for the past few days. I didn't have any specific injury, it just started. What are the common causes for pain and swelling in the knee?

Knee swelling can be due to mild arthritis or a simple sprain from walking. For a practical fix, apply ice for 15 minutes and keep the leg elevated on a pillow, it really helps reduce the fluid buildup without any cost.

With diabetes, any inflammation or joint pain takes longer to heal and needs careful attention to prevent infection. Keep your sugar levels in control because high sugar worsens joint inflammation, and do see an orthopaedic doctor.

I tried applying mustard oil with garlic and even turmeric paste for my swollen knee, which gave some temporary warmth. But honestly, if there is fluid inside, only a proper doctor's advice and physiotherapy will give you real long-term relief.

I had a meniscus tear that caused severe swelling and pain every time I climbed stairs. My advice is to get an MRI done if the swelling doesn't go away in a week, as X-rays don't always show ligament damage.

Since I have high BP, I have to be very careful with taking random painkiller tablets for my knee swelling as they can spike blood pressure. Please consult your physician for safe anti-inflammatory options instead of self-medicating.

Your knees are basically just reminding you that you are no longer 18 years old! It is usually just some fluid accumulation from a bad twist, so give the running a break and rest for a few days.

Knee pain and swelling often happen due to weak quadriceps muscles putting pressure on the joint. Once your doctor confirms there is no major ligament tear, slowly start low-impact straight-leg raises to build joint stability.
