What causes group b streptococcus in pregnancy?

I recently had my antenatal check-up and my gynaecologist mentioned something about Group B Streptococcus and how it's important to test for it during pregnancy. I'm a bit confused; what causes this particular infection during pregnancy?

My wife's doctor explained that about 20-30% of healthy women carry GBS naturally in their gut or vagina. It is not an infection you catch from someone, it just naturally exists there. The risk is only when it passes to the baby during birth, which is why antibiotics are given during labor.

Oh God, I panicked so much when my report came positive! I thought I did something wrong or ate something bad. But my doctor laughed and said it's as common as having normal bacteria on your skin, and baby will be totally safe with a simple IV drip.

Since GBS is just a natural bacterial presence, it won't affect your daily strength. Keep doing your light pregnancy walks and breathing exercises if your gynecologist permits. Just stay active and let the doctors handle the medical side.

In our days we did not have these specific tests, but we kept our body cool with tender coconut and fresh food. However, this GBS is a modern medical finding, so home remedies will not cure it. Please listen to your doctor and take whatever hospital treatment they suggest.

I tried eating garlic and drinking cranberry juice thinking it would clear out the bacteria, but honestly, none of that works for GBS. It is just a resident bacteria. Save your energy and rely on the standard antibiotics they give you at the hospital.

I was reading about pregnancy health for my sister and found out GBS isn't related to food, water, or lifestyle at all. It's just a natural organism that randomly comes and goes. Quite fascinating how common it actually is!

I am in my second trimester and learning about all these tests now. Is the swab test for GBS painful, or is it just a quick gentle test? I am a bit nervous to ask my doctor.
