What causes acid indigestion during pregnancy?

I'm in my second trimester, and suddenly this acidity is becoming a real problem, especially after meals. My mother-in-law says it's normal, but it's quite uncomfortable. Just wondering what exactly causes it during pregnancy.

My obstetrician explained that during pregnancy, high levels of the hormone progesterone relax the lower esophageal sphincter, allowing stomach acid to splash back up. Additionally, as the uterus grows, it physically presses against the stomach, which worsens the indigestion. She advised eating smaller, more frequent meals to manage this.

I had terrible heartburn during both my pregnancies, and back then we didn't have so many fancy medicines. It's just the baby growing and pushing everything up, nothing to worry about. Just eat light meals and don't lie down immediately after eating, it will pass once the baby is born.

My wife is in her second trimester and went through this bad acidity phase. The doctor said the progesterone hormone slows down digestion, which causes the acid buildup. We started going for very slow, short walks after dinner and it has helped her a lot.

My wife faced severe indigestion during her pregnancy, which was worsened by her fluctuating blood pressure. Hormones relax the esophageal valve, causing this issue. Monitoring her diet, avoiding salt-heavy foods, and regular BP checkups really helped keep things under control.

For mild acidity, chewing on a little fennel seeds (saunf) or having coconut water in the afternoon helps a lot. However, if you experience severe burning that makes it hard to swallow or causes vomiting, please consult your doctor instead of self-medicating.

While acid reflux is common due to hormonal changes, please get it checked by your gynecologist to ensure it's not preeclampsia-related upper abdominal pain. It's always safer to let your doctor know about any persistent discomfort during pregnancy.

I used to cry at night because the burning in my chest was so painful and I couldn't sleep at all. It is so hard when you are already exhausted. Just know that it is purely hormonal and your body is doing its best, you are not alone in feeling this way.

I thought my severe chest burning was just regular pregnancy acidity, but it turned out to be severe gallbladder issues that got complicated later. Please do not assume it is just indigestion if the pain is severe. Let your doctor know so they can run a quick scan if needed.

It is completely normal and mostly caused by hormones relaxing your stomach muscles! Baby growing big and pushing up also adds to the fun. Try drinking cold milk in small sips, it works like magic for the burning sensation! 🍼✨

I totally get how scary any pain or burning feels when you are expecting, you constantly worry if the baby is okay. The hormones relaxing your digestive system are the main cause, and it is completely normal. Try sleeping with your head elevated, it really helped calm my anxiety and the reflux.
