During an asthma attack, you will experience severe wheezing, a tight chest, and an inability to talk in full sentences. Just like managing high sugar, you must keep your emergency inhaler handy. If the wheezing doesn't stop, go to a hospital immediately.
A key sign of a severe asthma attack is when the skin sucks in around the ribs and neck when breathing, which we call retractions. There is also blue color on the lips or nails because of low oxygen. This is a medical emergency, so please get to an ER right away.
If you are coughing continuously, especially at night, and your rescue inhaler is not providing relief, it's a sign of a worsening asthma attack. Just like checking your thyroid levels, you need regular follow-ups with a pulmonologist to adjust your daily controller medication.
An asthma attack feels like you are trying to breathe through a very thin straw while running. The constant wheezing and coughing can keep you awake all night. If you find yourself struggling to catch your breath even while sitting still, don't wait till morning, see a doc.
