What are pregnancy pills?

My friend mentioned she was taking some 'pregnancy pills' for a while. I'm trying to understand more about family planning. What types of pregnancy pills are there?

Usually, these are just prenatal vitamins, iron, and folic acid that doctors give to support the baby's growth. But since I have thyroid, I had to be very careful because thyroid meds and calcium/iron pills can interfere with each other. Please get regular blood tests done and let your doctor plan the exact timing for each tablet.

Please do not take any pill during pregnancy based on online advice or what your neighbor took. Even simple multivitamin brands can have different compositions. It is absolutely critical to get your proper checkup done first and let an obstetrician prescribe exactly what your body needs.

Bro, my bhabhi is pregnant and she has like this whole box of colorful tablets she has to take daily. I think they are mostly just iron, calcium, and vitamins so the baby grows healthy. Definitely not something u can just buy and take yourself though, her doctor literally wrote a whole chart for her.

Hamare yahan doctor didi hamesha bolti hain ki baby ke vikas ke liye khoon ki goli aur folic acid bohot zaroori hoti hai. Ye koi bimari ki dawa nahi hai, bas maa aur bacche ko taqat dene ke liye hoti hai. Aap bina bhule acche se hara saag-sabzi bhi khao aur doctor ki suno.

When I asked my doctor about this, she explained that folic acid is crucial in the first 12 weeks to prevent neural tube defects. Later on, they add iron and calcium, but you shouldn't take them together as calcium blocks iron absorption. Always follow the specific timeline your doctor gives you for these supplements.

I was actually reading about this yesterday because my sister just got a positive test. From what I understood, 'pregnancy pills' usually refers to prenatal vitamins that you start even before conceiving, plus progesterone sometimes if there is a risk. It's a broad term so it's best to ask a doc what specifically applies to you.

Most pregnancy pills are prenatal supplements like folic acid, vitamin D3, and iron-calcium combos. My wife and I tracked all her daily dosages on an app because missing folic acid in the first trimester is not ideal. I'd suggest logging your supplements on a tracker so you stay consistent.
