Is it normal to run a fever after surgery?

My husband had a small surgery yesterday and he's running a low fever today. The doctor said it can happen, but I'm still a little uneasy. Is it normal to get a fever after surgery, or should I be more worried?

A mild warm feeling in the body can happen as the surgical wounds begin to heal, but you must be very careful. You can place a cool cloth on the forehead to comfort them, but never give any herbal decoctions without checking with the surgeon first. If the fever is high, take them to the clinic immediately.

A low-grade fever (under 100°F) is quite common in the first 24-48 hours as the body's immune system responds to the surgical stress. However, if the fever goes above 101°F or starts after the third day, it is a key sign of a wound infection or lung congestion. Call your hospital immediately and report it.

I had a mild fever of around 99.5°F for two days after my knee surgery, which my doctor said was just the body's natural inflammatory response. They kept a close watch on my wound temperature, and it went down on its own. If you are worried, it's best to call your surgical team.

Look, a high fever after surgery is absolutely not something to play around with at home. It could be a sign of infection in the stitches or a UTI from the catheter. Don't wait for it to go down naturally; call your operating doctor's assistant right away and get professional advice.

My father is having a minor surgery next week and I am really worried about the recovery phase. Is the fever accompanied by shivering or any pain in his chest? I hope he recovers very quickly.

Don't panic, but let's be sensible about this. Check if the surgical dressing is wet, red, or smelling bad, as that's a direct sign of infection causing the fever. If it's a very mild temperature, just give the prescribed post-op medicines on time, but keep your surgeon's number handy just in case.
