Is it normal to lose weight during pregnancy?

I'm in my first trimester and my doctor said I might actually lose a little weight initially due to morning sickness. Is this really normal? I'm a bit worried because everyone talks about gaining weight in pregnancy.

Losing a little weight in the first trimester is quite common due to severe morning sickness, so don't spend on fancy weight-gain powders. Just get a standard blood panel and urine test done at an affordable government-approved lab to make sure your nutrients are fine, and show it to your doctor.

I was reading an article about pregnancy health, and it mentioned that many women actually lose 1-2 kgs in the starting months because they can't keep food down. It seems pretty common as long as the weight loss isn't sudden or extreme. Still, keeping your gynecologist updated is always recommended.

I actually lost weight in my early pregnancy because my thyroid levels (TSH) went completely out of whack due to hormonal changes. Please make sure you get a routine thyroid test done along with your regular blood checks. It's very easy to manage with a doctor's guidance once diagnosed.

Losing weight when you are supposed to be gaining it can be a sign of hyperemesis gravidarum or other underlying issues. Please do not ignore this or assume it is just normal morning sickness. Go to your hospital and get a proper weight check and clinical evaluation immediately.

While slight weight loss in the first trimester due to nausea is fairly common, persistent weight loss in the second or third trimester is a clinical concern. It can affect fetal development, so it is absolutely essential to seek professional guidance from your obstetrician rather than relying on community forums.

During my pregnancy, I had severe aversion to food and lost some weight early on. Practicing very gentle deep breathing and keeping my mind calm helped reduce my nausea, allowing me to eat small portions of simple, wholesome food. Nourish your body gently and stay in touch with your doctor.
