Is heat or ice better for migraine?

I suffer from terrible migraines once or twice a month, and the pain can be debilitating. My mother always tells me to use a cold pack, but sometimes a warm towel feels good. Which is generally better for migraines, heat or ice?

Cold therapy is generally much better for migraines. Placing an ice pack on your forehead or temples constricts blood vessels and helps reduce the throbbing sensation. Heat is only useful on the neck if you have associated muscle tension.

I am experiencing my first severe headache and someone said it might be a migraine. Is it okay to use an ice pack directly on my temples, or should I wrap it in a cloth first? I am a bit scared of making it worse.

I totally get it, migraine pain is absolutely exhausting and ruins your whole day. Personally, putting a cold, damp cloth over my eyes in a dark room is the only thing that gives me peace. I hope you find some relief very soon.

I always worry that using the wrong temperature pack will trigger an even worse headache. If you are anxious like me, maybe start with a simple cold compress on your forehead for just 5 minutes to see how you feel. Take care and don't stress.

A severe migraine makes even the smell of delicious food unbearable. I find that placing a cold gel pack on my neck helps calm the throbbing so I can actually think about eating again. Skip the heat as it can make you feel more nauseous!
