Is heat or i c e better for back pain?

My mother often complains about her back pain, especially in the evenings. Sometimes she uses a hot water bag, and sometimes an ice pack. I'm confused which one is actually more effective for general back pain relief.

My physiotherapist gave me a clear guideline: use ice within the first 48 hours of an acute back injury to control inflammation and swelling. After two days, switch to heat therapy to increase blood flow and relax the muscle tissue. This approach works best.

I find that managing chronic issues like back pain requires systematic tracking, just like my thyroid care. I use a heating pad for general muscular stiffness, which helps a lot. But please do see a doctor for a proper checkup if it is a recurring issue.

With my busy schedule, I don't have time for ice packs melting everywhere. I use a plug-in electric heating belt at my desk for 15 minutes whenever my back feels stiff. It is highly practical and provides quick relief during office hours.

For me, heat is the absolute winner! ☀️ A warm gel pack on my lower back feels so relaxing after a long day of work. Ice is good only when you have a fresh injury, otherwise enjoy the warmth! 😊

Honestly, after a heavy weekend of food hunting and standing in long queues, my back screams for help. I find a warm bath or a heating pad helps me recover fast so I can go out eating again. Skip the cold stuff unless you have a real swelling!
