Is hair loss from methotrexate permanent?

I've been on methotrexate for my rheumatoid arthritis for about a year now, and my hair has thinned out so much. My family is worried about it. Is this hair loss something that will eventually go away, or am I stuck with it even after I stop the medication?

Generally, methotrexate-induced hair thinning is reversible because it doesn't damage the hair follicles permanently. However, you should discuss this side effect with your rheumatologist. They often prescribe folic acid supplements to help minimize this specific issue.

I completely understand how terrifying it is to watch your hair fall out while taking this heavy medicine. Please don't panic, it is a known side effect but it is usually temporary. The hair almost always starts growing back once the treatment is completed.

I totally get it, dealing with an autoimmune condition is hard enough without having to worry about losing your hair. Rest assured, the hair loss from methotrexate is typically not permanent. Please talk to your doctor, they might adjust your dosage to help.

Do not go online looking for magical oils to fix this because methotrexate affects the hair growth cycle from the inside. Talk directly to your doctor about your concerns. Only they can tell you if a dose adjustment or folic acid is the safe way forward.

It is temporary and will get better. If your doctor allows, try to go for light daily walks to improve blood circulation and lower stress. Keeping your body active helps it recover faster from the effects of strong medications.

My child, these strong modern medicines do heat up the body and cause hair loss, but it is not permanent. Keep yourself hydrated, eat cooling foods like curd, and do not worry. Your hair will return once the medicine stops.
