Is hair loss considered cosmetic?

I've been dealing with hair thinning for a while and was looking into treatments, but my insurance doesn't cover them, saying it's 'cosmetic'. Is hair loss generally considered a cosmetic issue, or can it indicate underlying health problems?

Most insurance companies treat it as cosmetic, yes! 😅 But honestly, it affects our confidence so much that for us it feels like a real health issue. Hope you find a good solution soon!

My bank account definitely doesn't think it's cosmetic with the amount I spend on special shampoos. But joke apart, doctors might call it cosmetic, though mentally it is a heavy burden to carry every day.

I used to think my hair loss was just a cosmetic, genetic issue and ignored it for a year. Turns out I had severe vitamin D and B12 deficiencies that were damaging my nerves too. Please get a proper health checkup done instead of just treating it as a beauty problem.

I worry about this so much! Even if people say it's just cosmetic, the constant stress of seeing your scalp can cause other health issues. I hope you are doing okay, please don't take too much pressure and consult a specialist.

Technically, simple male or female pattern baldness is classified as cosmetic. However, my dermatologist told me that if hair loss is due to alopecia areata, scalp infections, or thyroid issues, it is considered a medical condition. It really depends on what is causing the shedding.
