Is cramping normal during pregnancy?

I'm in my second trimester, around 18 weeks, and sometimes I get these pulling sensations and mild aches in my lower abdomen. My mother-in-law says it's normal, but I want to be sure. Is some amount of cramping generally considered normal during pregnancy?

Yes, mild cramping is normal as the uterus stretches to accommodate the growing baby. However, if the cramps are severe, concentrated on one side, or if there is any fluid leaking or bleeding, you must go to the hospital immediately.

I was researching this for my sister's pregnancy. Most medical forums say mild cramping is completely normal in both early and late stages, but tracking the intensity is very important.

I had constant mild cramps during my first trimester with my daughter. My doctor told me it was just my muscles stretching, and keeping my legs elevated while sitting really helped reduce the discomfort.

True, mild cramping is very common. Just ensure you don't take any self-prescribed painkillers without checking with your gynaecologist first.

Mild cramps are normal. Make sure you are drinking enough water and eating potassium-rich vegetarian foods like bananas, as dehydration can sometimes make abdominal cramps worse.
