How to relieve pain before root canal treatment?

My dentist told me I need a root canal, but my appointment is still a few days away. The tooth is throbbing, and I'm having trouble sleeping. What can I do to get some relief until then?

Honestly, the pain before an RCT can be crazy. I researched this a lot when my lower molar started throbbing, and my dentist explained that the nerve is heavily inflamed. He prescribed a specific anti-inflammatory painkiller and told me strictly not to chew from that side. He also said warm saltwater rinses help reduce the localized pressure around the gum line until the actual procedure.

My grandmother told me to keep a clove near the painful tooth, but my dentist warned me that too much clove oil can actually irritate the gums further. So I just stuck to the safe warm salt water rinses he suggested. Please ask your doctor for a safe painkiller dose instead of trying too many strong home remedies right now.

Keep your mind calm and try to breathe through the pain, it is only temporary. You can use a cold compress on your cheek to soothe the area naturally. Take care of yourself, stay positive, and let the doctor heal the tooth soon.

Oh that toothache is the worst! 🙈 I literally lived on cold vanilla ice cream and curd rice before my root canal appointment. Just avoid any hot tea or coffee because heat makes the throbbing way worse. You will feel so much better once the dentist cleans it up! 👍

Don't delay the treatment because delaying will only increase your medicine costs and maybe even require an expensive extraction later. Get the digital X-ray done quickly as it only costs around 200-300 rupees, and show it to your dentist. For temporary relief, a standard over-the-counter painkiller recommended by a pharmacist is the most pocket-friendly way to survive till your appointment.
