How to reduce pain after tooth removal?

Got a tooth extracted yesterday and the pain is still quite bad, especially when I try to eat or talk. The dentist gave me some painkillers, but are there any other ways to reduce this throbbing pain at home? It's really bothering me.

I had my wisdom tooth out last week and haven't slept properly since. Honestly, holding an ice pack to my cheek while blankly staring at the wall was my only savior. Also, trying to swallow cold curd without chewing is a whole workout in itself!

It was so hard for me to stay away from spicy biryani after my tooth extraction! I survived entirely on cold mango milkshakes, ice cream, and very soft khichdi at room temperature. Just make sure whatever you eat is completely cold and bland.

Please be very careful and watch out for extreme pain after 2-3 days. I developed a dry socket because I accidentally used a straw, and the pain was unbearable. If your pain increases instead of decreasing, contact your dentist immediately.

I have had two teeth removed in my lifetime, and the pain always feels bad on the first day but gets much better by the third. Just follow your dentist's instructions, don't fiddle with the area with your tongue, and let it heal peacefully.

No need to buy fancy recovery gels. Just buy a simple ice pack from the chemist or wrap some ice in a clean cloth and apply it to your cheek. Sleep with your head elevated on two pillows to reduce the throbbing pain tonight.

While home care like ice packs and soft diet helps, strictly following your dentist's prescription is key to pain management. They know the depth of the extraction and prescribe painkillers accordingly. Don't self-medicate or skip the prescribed antibiotics.

Keep the sterile gauze pad firmly pressed over the extraction site for at least 45 minutes to let the clot form. Do not spit repeatedly or use a straw, as the pressure can dislodge the clot and cause a dry socket. Take your prescribed pain meds on time.

My doctor explained that the blood clot is crucial for healing the bone. He strictly told me not to brush near the extraction site on the first day, and not to consume hot liquids like tea or coffee as heat dissolves the clot. Following these precise rules saved me from complications.

Beta, after 24 hours of the extraction, you can start rinsing your mouth gently with warm water mixed with a little rock salt. Do not do it on the first day, as the wound needs to close. Rest well and eat only soft foods.

Since I have thyroid issues, my healing process is sometimes slightly slower, which my dentist kept in mind. Ensure you share your complete medical history with your dentist so they can give you the right recovery plan and medicines. Keep your follow-up appointments.

Tooth extraction wounds can easily get infected if we are careless. If you notice any continuous bleeding, high fever, or bad odor from the mouth, please do not wait at home. Go back to the dental clinic immediately to get it checked.

I completely agree about the cold foods. Applying an ice pack outside your jaw for 15 minutes at a time really helps keep the swelling and throbbing down.
