How to prevent cleft lip during pregnancy?

My sister's baby was born with a cleft lip, and it was quite a difficult experience for them. I'm planning to conceive soon. What measures can I take during pregnancy to try and prevent cleft lip in my child?

I totally get why you're asking this; pregnancy brings so many worries. Cleft lip can be caused by a mix of genetic and environmental factors. Taking your prenatal vitamins, especially folic acid, and avoiding smoking or certain medications during pregnancy are generally recommended. Always talk to your OB-GYN about your concerns.

Having gone through this with my first child, I can tell you it's often not truly 'preventable' as many factors are genetic. However, what you *can* do is ensure you take all your prescribed prenatal vitamins, especially folic acid, starting even before conception. Avoid smoking, alcohol, and talk to your doctor about any medications you're taking. Early and consistent prenatal care is key.

This is a really important thing to ask about. From my reading, taking folic acid supplements before and early in pregnancy is often highlighted as a way to reduce the risk. Also, avoiding smoking and alcohol during pregnancy seems crucial. But it's also clear that sometimes it just happens due to genetics.

Haye Ram, the things mothers have to worry about! Cleft lip sounds serious. Back in my day, we just ate home food and hoped for the best. Now there's so much info. I guess taking all your iron and calcium tablets, and maybe staying away from bad habits, is the best one can do. And lots of prayer!

Preventing cleft lip? Man, pregnancy sounds like a minefield of things to worry about. I can barely prevent myself from hitting snooze five times. Best bet is to follow doc's advice religiously and hope for the best. And for god's sake, get some sleep if you can!

Hey sweetie, don't stress too much, but it's good you're thinking about this. The main thing doctors always say is take your folic acid supplements properly before and during pregnancy. And please, no smoking or alcohol. Just follow your gynaecologist's advice to the T. You're doing great!
