How to count calories for weight loss?

Been trying to lose weight for my wedding next year, and my cousin suggested calorie counting. Honestly, it sounds a bit complicated. Can someone tell me how to actually do it properly for weight loss?

Honestly, when I started my weight loss journey, calorie counting felt so overwhelming. I just downloaded a free tracking app and started scanning the barcodes of packages or searching for Indian foods like roti and dal. Just don't get too obsessive about every single grain, keep a rough estimate and focus on portion control first.

In my experience, mechanical counting sometimes takes away the joy of eating. I prefer focusing on mindful portion sizes and eating fresh, home-cooked satvik food. If you must count, do it gently to understand your body's actual fuel needs, rather than letting numbers rule your peace of mind.

Listen, don't stress yourself out too much with these complex calculations in the beginning. Just start by tracking your normal meals for 3-4 days on any app to see where you are overeating. Keep a safe deficit, don't go on any extreme starvation diets because that will only harm your metabolism.

I completely understand how stressful this can be, I used to panic looking at food labels thinking I'm ruining my health. It actually helped me to consult a professional dietitian first so I didn't have to guess everything. Please take it easy on yourself, your mental peace is more important than perfect numbers.

When I was trying to lose weight to control my high blood pressure, my doctor told me to focus on sodium and fresh food first, not just calories. I used a kitchen scale to measure my rice and oil, which actually revealed I was eating way more than I thought. Make sure you get your BP and regular blood tests done too while changing your diet.
