How soon is a pregnancy test accurate?

My period is late by about five days now. I'm planning to take a home pregnancy test. How soon is a pregnancy test generally considered accurate enough to trust the result?

My elders always told me to wait at least a week after a missed period before checking anything. When I asked our family doctor, she also confirmed that waiting for 7 days after the missed date gives the most accurate result because the hormone levels become quite strong by then.

I did a test today which is just two days before my expected period date, and it showed a very faint second line. Is that faint line considered accurate, or should I wait and test again after a few days to be absolutely sure?

I totally get it, the waiting period can feel so long and stressful when you are desperately hoping for a result. While some modern kits claim to work earlier, a urine test is truly reliable only from the first day of your missed period. Try to take a deep breath and give it a few more days.

My wife and I were so anxious that we tested too early and got a confusing negative, only to celebrate over a massive plate of hot biryani a week later when a delayed test came back positive! Save yourself the stress and wait until the day after your period is actually due.

Beta, the body needs time to show changes, so do not rush to buy kits too early. It is best to wait for at least 5 to 7 days after your missed date and test using your first morning urine, as it is most concentrated. Keep yourself warm, avoid stress, and let nature take its course.

Actually, testing before your missed period is just a waste of money and causes unnecessary tension, yaar. The home kits are designed to detect hCG which only rises to proper levels after implantation. Just wait for the actual missed day for a clear yes or no.
