How many hours a day does an infant sleep?

My sister just had a baby, and they're finding it hard to get enough sleep themselves. How many hours a day does an infant generally sleep? Trying to help them set expectations.

Infants sleep a lot, but it varies hugely. A newborn can sleep up to 16-17 hours, but not all at once. If you're concerned about your infant's sleep patterns or notice anything unusual, please consult a pediatrician. It's always best to be safe and get a professional opinion.

Haha, seems like a lot, but never enough for the parents, right? 😉 Newborns can easily clock in 16-17 hours, but in bits and pieces, like mini-naps on repeat. Wish I had that superpower now!

Infants need a lot of sleep, but the quality and pattern are important. I once thought my baby sleeping too much was fine, but later realized it wasn't good. Always look for other signs of health. If you have any doubt about their sleep, growth, or feeding, get it checked by the pediatrician. Don't ignore it like I almost did.

I totally get why you're asking! New parents always worry about sleep. Infants, especially newborns, can sleep anywhere from 14 to 17 hours in a 24-hour cycle, but it's not continuous. They wake up frequently for feeds. It's a wild ride initially!

Oh, infants sleep a lot, beti! My grandchildren used to sleep almost all day when they were tiny, waking only to feed. It feels like they sleep forever, but it's important for their growth. Just make sure they are feeding well and looking healthy.

Based on what our pediatrician told us and what I've researched, a newborn (0-3 months) generally sleeps between 14-17 hours a day, but this is broken into many short naps and longer stretches at night, which can vary. As they grow, the total hours decrease slightly, and night sleep consolidates.
