You never realize how much you use your thumb until you can't use it at all! The sharp pain lasted for about a week for me, but the frustration of trying to button my shirt lasted much longer. Just keep it elevated and be patient.
The acute pain usually subsides in about 1 to 2 weeks, though some soreness remains while it is in a cast or splint. I had mine done at a top specialty clinic, and they provided a very detailed rehabilitation plan. It is best to ask your surgeon clearly about what to expect.
The sharp pain starts to fade after 10 days. To avoid extra hospital visits and costs, make sure you keep the bandage completely dry during baths so it doesn't get infected. A simple plastic cover secured with a rubber band works perfectly.

I had my thumb surgery four days ago and the throbbing pain is still keeping me awake at night. Is this normal, or should the pain have reduced by now? I am really worried that something might be wrong with the healing.

My doctor explained that the nerve endings in our fingers and thumbs are highly sensitive, which is why the pain feels so intense initially. The acute phase lasts about a week, while complete healing of the ligament or bone can take 6 to 8 weeks. Keeping it dry and immobile is key.
