How long after pregnancy can you have sex?

I just had my baby a couple of months ago, and I'm curious about when it's generally safe to start having sex again. My doctor mentioned waiting, but I forgot the exact timeframe.

The standard medical advice is to wait for 6 weeks postpartum. This is because your cervix needs time to close and any tears or stitches need to heal completely. Please don't rush it, and make sure your doctor gives you the go-ahead at your checkup.

Most doctors recommend waiting 6 weeks to avoid any risk of uterine infection. Since postpartum hormones can also mess with your thyroid levels, make sure you get your routine blood tests done. Low energy and low libido are very common if your thyroid is fluctuating.

I was so worried because even at 7 weeks, I felt too dry and was scared it would hurt. My doctor reassured me that hormonal changes during breastfeeding make things very dry, and using a good lube made all the difference. It is completely normal to take your time.

Please be very careful and do not rush. I had a tear that got slightly infected because we tried too early around 5 weeks. It is best to wait for at least 6 to 8 weeks, and absolutely get checked by your gynaecologist before doing anything.

A gap of 6 weeks is highly recommended so the body can recover. Drink warm water and eat nourishing soups to help your body heal from inside. If you experience any sudden heavy bleeding or severe pain during or after, please see your doctor immediately.
