How does weight loss surgery work?

My sister's doctor mentioned weight loss surgery as an option for her. It sounds a bit scary, to be honest. How does this kind of surgery actually help people lose so much weight?

Essentially, surgeries like gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy physically reduce the size of your stomach so you can only eat very tiny portions. Even after surgery, you have to be extremely disciplined with your vegetarian diet, focusing on protein-rich items like paneer, sprouts, and dals since absorption becomes limited. It is a major life change, not an easy shortcut.

I was just reading up on bariatric surgery yesterday out of pure curiosity. It seems they either stitch a part of your stomach or bypass some intestines so your body absorbs fewer calories. It sounds pretty intense honestly, and I wonder what the long-term recovery and lifestyle feels like.

I don't know much about this, but is weight loss surgery safe for young people who have a lot of weight to lose? Does it leave big scars on the belly? If anyone here has actually gone through it, could you please tell me how many days it takes to recover and stand back on your feet?

My doctor actually discussed bariatric surgery with me because my diabetes was getting hard to control with medication alone. The surgery changes your gut hormones which can rapidly improve insulin sensitivity and lower blood sugar. However, you still have to strictly monitor your sugar intake and eat small, planned meals for the rest of your life.

In this surgery, the big doctors reduce the size of your stomach box so you eat very little food, like just half a roti. It is a very big operation and requires a lot of courage and care afterwards. If you are thinking about it, please sit with your whole family and a good hospital doctor to understand everything carefully first.

They basically use laproscopic instruments to reduce the stomach capacity, ho na. So you feel full very quickly and can't overeat even if you want to. But the post-op diet of liquids and purees for weeks is quite tough, haan na. You really need strong mental prep for this.

A friend of mine with severe PCOS and metabolic issues had this surgery done last year, and it really helped her insulin levels. But it is not a magical cure, as she still has to work hard on her diet and take lifelong supplements. It is a very personal decision, so please take your time and discuss it thoroughly with an endocrinologist.
