How does methotrexate work for ectopic pregnancy?

A friend recently had an ectopic pregnancy and was treated with Methotrexate instead of surgery. I was quite surprised by this. How does this medication work to resolve an ectopic pregnancy without needing an operation?

It basically stops the fast-growing cells of the pregnancy from developing further. This allows the body to absorb the tissue naturally without needing a surgical cut.

My doctor explained that methotrexate is a folate antagonist. It stops cell division in the ectopic pregnancy mass, helping to resolve it safely, provided the fallopian tube has not ruptured.

It is a highly time-sensitive medical procedure. If you are diagnosed with an ectopic pregnancy, get the injection immediately at a hospital and take complete bed rest as advised.

It stops the ectopic cells from multiplying so the pregnancy dissolves without surgery.

It is a very emotional and stressful situation. Methotrexate works well to resolve it medically, but make sure you have regular HCG blood tests afterward to confirm the levels go down to zero.

I was reading about this online. It is amazing how a single injection can prevent a major emergency surgery by stopping the ectopic tissue growth in time.
