How does an iud work to prevent pregnancy?

My gynecologist mentioned an IUD as a long-term birth control option during my last check-up. I'm doing some research before making a decision. Could someone explain how an IUD actually works inside the body to prevent pregnancy?

I went to a reputed gynecologist at a good hospital to get mine done. They explained that copper IUDs prevent sperm from reaching the egg, while hormonal ones thin the uterine lining. You should definitely consult a proper specialist to see which type suits your body best.

It is a tiny T-shaped device that a doctor places inside the uterus. It works quietly for years without you having to remember to take a pill daily, which makes it a very practical option for busy women.

An Intrauterine Device (IUD) works primarily by affecting sperm motility and preventing fertilization. Hormonal variants also thicken cervical mucus as an additional barrier. It is highly effective, but you must have it inserted and checked regularly by a qualified gynecologist.

Honestly, at this stage of life, anything that works for 5 to 10 years without my constant attention is a blessing because my memory is already failing me! It just sits there and blocks the sperm, saving you from daily panic about missed pills.

If you look at the long-term cost, an IUD is incredibly budget-friendly. You pay for the device and insertion once, and it protects you for up to 5 or 10 years, which is much cheaper than buying monthly contraceptive pills or emergency pills over that time.

Many women in our community use IUDs because they are highly reliable and reversible. Once the doctor inserts it, you are protected for years, and if you plan to have a baby later, you can just get it removed easily. It is one of the most hassle-free methods available.
