Does weight training cause weight gain?

I've started going to the gym and my trainer suggested weight training. But I'm a bit worried it will make me gain weight instead of losing it. Is it possible to gain weight from weight training?

According to my smart scale data, my weight initially went up by 1.5 kg because of muscle micro-tears holding water. It is not fat gain, just body recomp!

It can show a slight increase on the scale, but make sure you aren't overeating paneer or protein shakes to compensate. Keep your calorie intake balanced.

My daughter started gymming and panicked when she gained a kilo. I told her to look at how loose her clothes are fitting instead of looking at the machine.

Yaar, throw that weighing scale out! Your body is just getting toned and strong. Trust the mirror, not the numbers, don't stress too much.

I lifted weights for a week and gained 2 kilos. Mostly because I felt so proud that I ate three extra parathas after the workout!

Relax, this is a very common phase. Your muscles hold water to repair themselves when you lift. Give it a few weeks and your weight will stabilize.

Normally it is just muscle mass, but if you have sudden unexplained weight gain along with fatigue, please get a thyroid checkup done to rule other things out.

I am too tired to even lift my morning tea, but yes, muscles weigh more than fat. So your scale might show extra weight while you actually look slimmer.

I totally understand your anxiety, I almost cried when the scale went up after my first week of lifting. It is just temporary water retention and muscle building.
