Does weight loss cause hair thinning?

After losing a good amount of weight quite rapidly due to a change in diet and lifestyle, I'm noticing that my hair seems much thinner than before. Can quick weight loss actually cause hair to thin out, or is something else going on?

I have lost about 8 kgs in the last two months but my hair has started shedding like crazy. I am really panicking right now. Did anyone else face this, and does the hair eventually grow back?

Rapid weight loss often leads to nutritional deficiencies, especially if you are not getting enough zinc, iron, and protein. If you are on a vegetarian diet, include lots of paneer, lentils, and seeds to prevent this shedding.

Yeah bro, it happened to me when I went on an extreme calorie deficit. My hair thinned out quite a bit at the crown. It is basically the shock of quick weight loss on your system. It stopped once I increased my protein.

I went through this exact phase after losing 15 kgs last year. It is a temporary condition called telogen effluvium. My dermatologist gave me some basic hair supplements and within 4 months, my normal volume returned.

Look, if you do crash diets to lose weight in a hurry, your body will cut off nutrients to your hair follicles. Lose weight slowly and sensibly. Eat balanced meals instead of starving yourself.

First I had to worry about my weight, and now that I lost it, I have to worry about my hair vanishing, haha! It is quite common because our bodies get confused by the sudden weight change. Just take a good multivitamin.
