Does wearing headbands cause hair loss?

I love wearing headbands to keep my hair out of my face, especially during workouts or when I'm studying. My friend recently told me that constantly wearing them can lead to hair loss. Is this something I should be worried about?

Hey, don't worry too much. Headbands only cause issues if they are pulling your hair roots constantly, which is called traction alopecia. Just buy loose, cotton ones and give your hair some breathing time without any accessories during the day.

It actually can if you wear them very tight and in the exact same spot daily. I used to get hair thinning right at my hairline from tight gym bands. Switch to soft, seamless fabric bands and never pull them too tight, and your hair will recover.

Actually yaar, I had this doubt too because those plastic hairbands with teeth feel so tight. My doc said those can definitely break your hair from the front. Better to use soft cloth bands and avoid wearing them for long hours.

I see this question a lot here. Wearing them occasionally for sports or washing your face is totally fine. Just don't sleep in them or wear them tight all day long. Let your hair stay natural as much as possible.

I completely understand why you are anxious, I literally stopped using my gym headbands because I thought I was balding. But my dermatologist reassured me that normal use is perfectly safe. Just don't pull your hair back too harshly and you will be fine.

It depends on the tension. If your headband is leaving a red mark on your forehead, it is way too tight and will damage your hair follicles. Use loose athletic bands and wash them regularly to prevent acne or scalp build-up.
