Does washing hair cause hair loss?

My hairfall has increased significantly lately, and I notice it most during my hair wash routine. Sometimes it feels like clumps are coming out. Is it possible that the act of washing hair itself leads to hair loss, or am I doing something wrong?

I get so anxious every time I see hair in the bathroom drain, it literally ruins my day! But they say it's just old hair falling out. Still, I always count the strands and worry if my shampoo is too strong or if I am rubbing too hard.

Washing your hair too frequently with hot water can dry out the roots and cause some breakage, beta. It is best to wash your hair twice a week with lukewarm water, and apply mild amla or coconut oil gently a few hours before washing.

Think of it this way: washing just clears out the dead hair that was already loose. Just make sure you are using a mild, pH-balanced shampoo and avoiding very hot water, which can irritate the scalp. There is no need to worry about normal daily shedding.

Physiologically, hair washing only releases the strands that have already entered the telogen or shedding phase. However, if you notice sudden, patchy, or excessive hair fall, it could indicate an underlying nutritional deficiency or hormonal issue. Consulting a dermatologist is always the best path.

Nope, not at all! Washing actually keeps your scalp super clean and fresh, which is amazing for hair growth. Just be gentle when combing wet hair, as that is when it is most fragile!

No, it doesn't cause hair loss. Just avoid scrubbing too aggressively with your nails; use your fingertips instead.

I was reading up on this because I noticed more hair in the sink on wash days. Turns out we lose up to 100 hairs daily, and washing just brings them all down at once. It's actually completely normal and nothing to panic about.
