Does underactive thyroid cause water retention?

I've been diagnosed with an underactive thyroid a few months ago, and I feel like I'm always retaining water, especially in my ankles. Is this a known symptom of the condition? Does an underactive thyroid cause water retention?

I completely understand how frustrating and scary it feels when your face and hands suddenly look swollen and puffy. Yes, an underactive thyroid definitely causes water retention. Please don't worry too much, as this swelling goes away once you start the right medication.

Yes, it does cause a lot of fluid retention and bloating, but keeping your salt intake low really helps manage the puffiness.

My doctor explained that hypothyroidism slows down renal function and blood flow, which causes our body to retain sodium and water. He specifically advised me to monitor my daily salt intake and get my TSH levels checked regularly to adjust my thyroxine dose.

I totally get it, waking up with swollen fingers and a heavy body can make you feel so uncomfortable and down. It is indeed due to the slow metabolism caused by thyroid. Just be gentle with yourself and give your body some time to heal.

Yes, it does. In my case, ignoring the swelling led to severe joint pain and extreme fatigue. Please do not ignore these signs of water retention; go see an endocrinologist immediately to check if your thyroid dosage needs to be adjusted.

Oh, absolutely! I used to wake up with such a puffy face, looking like I ate ten packets of salty chips the night before. Once I got my thyroid medicine dose corrected, that stubborn water weight disappeared, and I could enjoy my meals in peace again.
