Does type 1 diabetes cause weight gain?

My doctor told me that Type 1 diabetes usually leads to weight loss if not managed properly. But I feel like I've actually put on a few kgs since my diagnosis and starting insulin. Is it possible for Type 1 to cause weight gain instead?

Honestly, Type 1 itself usually causes weight loss before diagnosis because the body can't use sugar. But once you start insulin therapy, some weight gain can happen because your body is finally absorbing nutrients properly. You just have to be very careful with your carb counting and insulin dosage under your doctor's guidance.

Weight changes in Type 1 can happen due to insulin dosing, but it could also be due to other things like thyroid issues which are common with autoimmune conditions. It is always safest to get a complete blood panel done. Don't guess, let your diabetologist analyze the reports.

Don't worry too much about this. It is quite common to see some changes in weight when you start managing insulin. Just take it one day at a time and speak to your doctor if you feel concerned.

See, when insulin therapy starts, the body starts storing glucose instead of flushing it out, which can add a few kilos. Simple solution is to keep a check on daily home-cooked meals and do a simple 30-minute walk daily. No need to buy expensive diet plans, just eat simple ghar ka khana in control.

Please don't ignore any sudden weight changes. I ignored my fluctuating weight and fatigue for months thinking it was just stress, and ended up in the ICU with severe complications. If you are noticing sudden weight gain or loss, please go get your HbA1c and other tests done immediately.

Beta, I have lived with diabetes for thirty years now. Initially, when you start insulin, the body adjusts and you might gain some healthy weight which is actually a sign of recovery. Don't stress over a few kilos, just focus on keeping your sugar levels stable and staying active.
