Does thyroid medication cause weight gain?

About to start medication for my thyroid problem, there's a bit of worry about side effects. My aunt mentioned that her thyroid medicine made her gain weight. Is it true that thyroid medication commonly causes weight gain?

Actually, thyroid medication for hypothyroidism is supposed to help you lose the excess weight by fixing your metabolism. If you are still gaining weight, you might need a dose adjustment or a lifestyle check. I manage both my thyroid and BP with regular tests.

No, standard thyroid hormone replacement therapy (like levothyroxine) does not cause weight gain. In fact, it typically helps you lose any weight gained from a slow thyroid. If you are gaining weight, your TSH levels might still be high, so check with your doctor.

I tried blaming my thyroid pill for my weight gain, but my doctor caught me eating late-night samosas! The pill actually helps your metabolism, it doesn't make you fat. Keep taking the pill and maybe avoid the samosas.

No, beta, the medicine doesn't increase weight. It actually helps to make the body active and healthy again. Just eat normal home-cooked meals and take your pill on time every morning.

In my ten years of managing hypothyroidism, I can tell you the medication helps with weight loss, not gain. If you are gaining, make sure you take the pill on a completely empty stomach with only water and wait at least 45 minutes before tea or breakfast.

Don't let these rumors scare you. The thyroid medication is meant to bring your hormone levels back to normal, which helps control weight rather than increase it. Just take it regularly and trust your doctor.

I was also terrified of starting the medication thinking I would blow up in size. But actually, my weight started going down slowly once my TSH levels came back to normal. Don't worry at all, the medicine is your friend.

That's a total myth. Thyroid pills replace the hormone your body is failing to produce, which actually boosts your sluggish metabolism. If you're gaining weight, get your levels re-checked because your dose might be too low.

My cousins told me thyroid tablets would make me put on weight, but my endocrinologist clarified that the medicine actually treats the cause of weight gain. I trusted the doctor, and my weight has actually stabilized now.

According to my doctor, thyroid hormone replacement corrects the deficiency that slows your metabolism. Any initial weight gain after starting might just be your body adjusting, or your dose is too low. A correct dose should aid in weight regulation, not gain.

Haan, log aisi baatein bolte hain but medicine se weight gain nahi hota na. Actually, thyroid control mein aayega toh weight automatic manage hone lagega. Bass doctor ki suno aur dhyan rakho.
