Does the shot cause weight gain?

Someone told me that the contraceptive shot can cause you to gain weight. I'm considering it, but I'm really worried about this side effect. Is this true?

If you are talking about the Depo-Provera contraceptive shot, my gynecologist explained that progesterone can increase your appetite and cause water retention. She noted that about 25% of women experience some weight gain, so keeping track of your daily calories is helpful.

I panicked completely when I gained 3 kgs within a month of taking the shot. But my doctor reassured me it was mostly water weight and things would stabilize in a few months, which they did. Just stay patient!

I had severe hormonal fluctuations and gained around 8 kgs after taking the hormonal shot, which took a long time to correct. Please don't ignore these changes. Consult your doctor to see if a different contraceptive option suits your body better.

I ignored my rapid weight gain and mood swings after starting a new medication, thinking it was just stress. It turned out to be a major thyroid issue that got worse because I delayed my checkup. Get a full blood test done to know for sure.

Even if hormonal shots increase appetite, you can manage it with regular strength training and a high-protein diet. Lifting weights helps keep your metabolism high and prevents excess fat storage.

I am planning to get my first shot next week and I am really nervous about the side effects. Does this weight gain happen to everyone, or is it only for some people?

Hormonal shots can sometimes affect insulin resistance, which makes weight management trickier. If you are taking them, please monitor your fasting sugar levels regularly to ensure everything is fine.

Yes, some hormonal shots can cause mild weight gain or bloating. Try to take care of your health and don't be too hard on yourself.

I was reading some medical forums about this yesterday. It seems like the progesterone in the shot can mimic pregnancy hormones, which naturally makes the body store a bit of fat. Quite interesting how hormones work!

I get about 4 hours of sleep and my hormones are already a mess, so adding a shot to the mix would probably make me gain weight just by breathing. Sleep deprivation and medicine side effects are a deadly combo!

Honestly, the shot gave me such crazy midnight cravings that I was eating biryani at 2 AM! It's hard to tell if it's the medicine or just my deep love for food. Maybe try keeping healthy snacks nearby just in case.

Drinking warm ginger water and eating light home-cooked meals can help manage the bloating and water retention from these shots. But if you feel sudden heavy swelling or extreme lethargy, please go see your doctor immediately.
