Does sulfasalazine cause hair loss?

I've been taking Sulfasalazine for my inflammatory bowel condition for about six months now. Lately, I've noticed my hair thinning quite a bit, which is concerning. Could Sulfasalazine be causing hair loss as a side effect?

Yes, hair thinning is a known but relatively uncommon side effect of sulfasalazine. It often happens because the drug can interfere with folic acid absorption. Talk to your doctor, they might just prescribe a folic acid supplement to help.

While clinical data suggests hair loss is a rare side effect of sulfasalazine, individual reactions vary significantly. Do not stop taking the medication abruptly as your underlying condition might flare up. Discuss alternative options with your specialist.

I faced severe hair thinning when I started sulfasalazine for my arthritis. My rheumatologist increased my daily folic acid dosage, and the hair fall stopped within six weeks. Don't worry, it is usually temporary and reversible.

At Max Hospital, my doctor clearly explained that sulfasalazine can sometimes cause mild hair loss due to folate depletion. They monitored my blood work regularly. You should directly ask your prescribing doctor for a solution rather than guessing.

Your body goes through a lot of stress when adjusting to new medications, which can also trigger hair shedding. If your doctor permits, light daily walking and staying active can lower stress levels and improve blood circulation to your scalp.

Managing multiple medications is tricky. When I was looking into this for my joint pain, I realized nutritional deficiencies often play a role too. Focus on eating nutrient-dense, low-glycemic foods to support your body while on this medication.

Any drug side effect should be reported to your doctor immediately instead of ignoring it. If you are experiencing sudden hair fall after starting sulfasalazine, please get your blood levels and thyroid checked for absolute safety.
