Does rifampin cause weight gain?

I've been on a course of medication for TB, including rifampin, for a few months now. I've noticed I'm gaining weight quite steadily since I started the treatment. Is weight gain a known side effect of taking rifampin?

My nephew had to take this medicine for many months. It did make him feel very hungry, so he put on a little weight, but his health recovered fully. Don't worry about the weight, recovering from the disease is the most important thing.

Rifampin is a very strong medication used for serious infections, and sudden changes in weight or swelling can sometimes indicate liver issues. Please don't ignore any new symptoms. Consult your doctor immediately to check if your liver enzymes are normal.

Weight gain is not a very common direct side effect of Rifampin, but as your body heals from the infection, your appetite naturally improves. Make sure to stay well-hydrated and check with your treating doctor if you notice sudden swelling in your feet.

If you are feeling extra hungry because of the medication, try keeping healthy roasted chana or cucumber slices at home. This simple adjustment will keep your stomach full without causing unnecessary weight gain.

I ignored the mild side effects of my long-term medication and ended up with complications that took months to resolve. If you feel any sudden weight gain or water retention while on Rifampin, go for a proper clinical checkup right away.
