Does retinol cause hair loss?

I started using a new serum with retinol for my skin, and I've also been experiencing some hair thinning lately. I'm trying to figure out what's causing it. Can retinol, even if used on the face, somehow cause hair loss?

I have been using a retinol serum on my face for over two years now to clear up some old acne scars. Personally, my hairline is exactly where it was and I haven't noticed any extra hair on my pillow. That has been my experience, but everyone is different.

No, regular face retinol doesn't cause hair loss. Just keep it away from your scalp to avoid irritation.

Why would applying cream on your face make your hair fall out? Unless you are literally rubbing high-strength retinol all over your scalp every day, there is zero connection. Don't stress over every random thing you read online.

Hey, relax. Retinol is meant for skin renewal on your face and doesn't get into your bloodstream in amounts that would affect hair growth. If you are experiencing hair fall, it is probably due to stress, pollution, or diet, not your skincare routine.

I was actually reading a dermat blog about this yesterday! They said only extremely high oral doses of Vitamin A can cause hair thinning, but normal cosmetic creams applied to the face absolutely do not. It is safe to use.

I totally get it, when we are already dealing with hair thinning, we start doubting every single product we put on our body. It is so stressful to worry about these things. But rest assured, your face retinol is not the culprit here.

Not at all! Retinol actually helps with skin glow and has nothing to do with hair roots. So keep glowing and don't worry about losing your hair!

My newborn barely lets me sleep, so my hair is falling out from pure exhaustion, but my retinol is definitely not to blame. If skincare caused baldness, half the people on Instagram would have no hair by now!
