Does psoriatic arthritis cause weight gain?

Dealing with psoriatic arthritis has been challenging, and to top it off, I've been gaining weight steadily. I'm trying to be careful with my diet. Does psoriatic arthritis or its related medications typically cause weight gain?

The condition itself doesn't directly cause weight gain, but some medications like oral steroids definitely do. You should ask your doctor clearly about the side effects of your prescriptions during your next hospital visit.

Don't stress too much about the scale right now. When joints hurt, our movement naturally decreases which can lead to a bit of weight gain. Focus on healing your joints first, okay?

Weight gain is common because pain limits our physical activity. If you have diabetes like me, weight gain can make insulin resistance worse, so you must control your carb intake very carefully.

My rheumatologist explained that systemic inflammation can alter metabolic pathways, and limited mobility due to joint pain further reduces calorie burn, leading to gradual weight gain.

Yes, I gained about 5 kgs when my flare-up was bad because I literally couldn't walk. Once the pain reduced with medications, I started light walking and managed to lose it.

Between the pain keeping me awake all night and the midnight snacks I eat because of that, weight gain was bound to happen! It's hard but we just have to laugh through it.

Bro, when you can't hit the gym because your knees are swollen, you are bound to put on some weight. It's totally normal, don't sweat it too much.

I panicked when I saw the scale going up during my worst flare-up. But my doctor reassured me it's just fluid retention and lack of movement, and it became totally normal once my joints improved.

Lack of movement is the main culprit. If your rheumatologist allows, try low-impact activities like swimming or slow walking on a treadmill to keep your metabolism active and prevent weight gain.

The weight gain often happens when our physical body becomes inactive due to pain. Gentle yogic stretches and deep breathing can help maintain metabolic balance without straining the sore joints.
