Does prilosec otc cause weight gain?

I regularly take over-the-counter Prilosec for my heartburn whenever it acts up. I'm trying to manage my weight, so I wanted to ask if this OTC version of Prilosec can cause weight gain.

When I was taking this for my acidity, I asked my gastroenterologist at Kokilaben Hospital about side effects. He clearly told me that OTC antacids don't cause weight gain on their own. It is always better to ask your doctor directly instead of relying on internet rumors.

Prilosec OTC is an acid reducer and medically speaking, weight gain is not a common side effect of this class of drugs. However, because it relieves heartburn, some people might find themselves eating more comfortably, leading to weight changes. If you are concerned, a quick chat with your GP is the best way to get clarity.

Actually, I started taking OTC Prilosec last week and I feel a bit bloated and heavy. I am not sure if it is just water weight or if anyone else also felt the same after starting it? I am getting a bit worried now.

I have seen many people in this group ask about acidity tablets. Usually, they don't cause any weight gain at all. Just make sure you are not taking them empty stomach daily for months without a doctor's prescription. Simple home-cooked food will also help lower your acidity.

There are so many myths on the internet about everyday medicines. OTC pills shouldn't be taken long-term without supervision anyway. If you are seeing a sudden change in weight, go get your thyroid and blood sugar tested instead of blaming the antacid.
